DAVAO CITY -- Four mining companies in the Davao region are expected to start operating this year with three firms set to seek approval of their project plans within the quarter.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau has adopted a stricter procedure of processing applications to ensure that mining firms holding permits are not mere speculators.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) identified the four firms ready to operate as Sinophil Mining and Trading Corp., Holcim Philippines, Inc., Alsons Development and Investment Corp., and Nationwide Development Corp. (Nadecor).
The Mines bureau’s projections are based on initial reports gathered from the field including information provided by project proponents.
Sinophil Mining, which has a 3,000-hectare chromite project in Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, has already submitted its feasibility study to the MGB for approval, said Edilberto L. Arreza, regional director of the agency.
Cement maker Holcim is also set to file feasibility study results for its 5,000-hectare limestone project in Panabo, Davao del Norte. But Mr. Arreza said the company has reduced the project area, which would be in the study result that has yet to be submitted to his office.
Alsons Development and Investment Corp., under the Alcantara group which has a copper-gold project in Mainit, Nabunturan, Compostela Valley, is also expected to submit its project plan soon prior to starting site development.
Nadecor, which recently broke ties with partner Benguet Corp., a listed company, is wrapping up its exploration activities and would be submitting feasibility study results for a copper-gold project at the Kingking mine in Pantukan, Compostela Valley.
The four companies, said Mr. Arreza, are among 23 firms that are conducting exploration activities in the region.
The MGB recently adopted a stricter procedure of processing applications to ensure that mining firms holding permits are not mere speculators and would be developing their sites within the near term.
The four firms mentioned are not expected to encounter problems, however, the official said.
Mr. Arreza also noted that Asiaticus Management Corp. has started negotiating with a technology provider so it could start the Pujada nickel project in Mati, Davao Oriental. However, Laureano A. Barrios, Asiaticus vice-president, denied that it has started the negotiation with another firm, saying the company was still in the exploration stage.
The region’s business leaders earlier projected increased mining activities this year.
“[The] demand for raw materials in China and India is expected to help the mining industry in our region take off,” Vicente T. Lao, chairman of the Mindanao Business Council, told BusinessWorld.
