SENIOR CITIZENS wishing to avail of a 5% power rate discount can start applying as rules implementing the perk are now in effect.
"Eligible senior citizens wishing to avail of the discount could start applying starting this month at any Meralco Business Center,", Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said in a statement issued on Friday, adding: "customers will need to bring proof of age and citizenship, proof of residence, and proof of billing."
Applications will be processed within 15 days and the discount, if approved, will be applied during the next billing period.
"Meralco customers eligible for the senior citizens’ discount are encouraged to complete their requirements before going to the Meralco Business Centers to apply for the said discount," the company said.
Regulators said other distribution utilities were expected to also begin gathering applications for the discount this month.
Republic Act 9994 grants qualified senior citizens a 5% discount on utility rates, provided that "the individual meters for the foregoing utilities are registered in the name of the senior citizen residing therein; Provided, further, that the monthly consumption does not exceed one hundred kilowatt hours of electricity or thirty cubic meters of water."
The privilege is "granted per household, regardless of the number of senior citizens residing therein," the law states.
