PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino 3rd is scheduled to lead today the inauguration of a 100-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Cebu province.
Secretary Jose Almendras of the Department of Energy, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu and officials of the Korean Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO)—which owns the facility—will join President Aquino in the inaugural rites.
The power plant, which is located in Colon village, will use clean coal technology and is expected to provide 11.24 percent of the Visayas grid’s power requirements.
The facility is equipped with Circulation Fluidized Bed Combustion technology, which is intended to reduce generated greenhouse emissions while offering cost savings in its operations.
Provincial officials lauded KEPCO for its energy project, saying that the plant would address the power requirements of the region.
They also asked the company to construct more power plants in Cebu.
Garcia said that the KEPCO plant would ensure the growth and sustainability of business and industries in Cebu.
It would also encourage more investments in the province, she added.CRIS G. ODRONIA
