The Energy Department is expecting Mindanao to suffer power shortage next year despite a relatively stable supply this year.
Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras said recently that Mindanao is not expected to experience shortfall this year.
“We’re revising the estimates because we overestimated this year. We did not hit the peaks that we saw. But the demand structure is improving, the sales of electricity is going up,” he said.
“Next year, challenging,” Almendras said, adding that it would depend on the weather situation in the region.
“Although PAGASA made an announcement that we’re entering the La NiƱa phase again,” he said. “If that happens, we’ll be ok and hopefully the new power plants come online by 2013,” he added.
“We’re not happy with the reserve levels in Mindanao. We’re lucky that the hydros in Mindanao are doing well, no major breakdown, it’s ok but it’s still not stable,” he said.
Mindanao is forecast to be short by 450 megawatts in 2015 if preent capacities are not be expanded. This means that rotational brownouts of up to 12 hours may be experienced in the region.Jeremiah F. de Guzman
