CALAPAN CITY–Oriental Mindoro Rep. Rodolfo Valencia and local officials are calling on the Energy Regulatory Commission to clear the electrical supply link between mainland Luzon and this island via submarine cable.
He said the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has agreed last January to undertake the Batangas-Mindoro Interconnection Project worth P10.99 billion.
“But the Energy Regulatory Commission has the final approval to start it,” Valencia told Manila Standard.
He noted that the NGCP had included the cable connection under the “Luzon-Mindoro Interconnection Project” in its 2009-2010 Transmission Plan.
The submarine cable project involves building a 230-kilovolt substation in Batangas City and a 500-kilovolt substation in Barangay Ilijan.
Data from the Department of Energy showed that Mindoro is expected to have a 203-megawatt generation capacity by 2016.
Valencia told ERC Chairwoman Zenaida Cruz-Ducut that the submarine cable would contribute to Mindoro’s economic growth through tourism, manufacturing, and other industries.
The connection will also ease any power shortage in the mainland once the mix of fossil energy source and renewables is achieved in Mindoro, he added.
In the works is the 48-megawatt wind farm in Puerto Galera, and its P3.4-billion counterpart in Bulalacao.
“Still untapped are Oriental Mindoro’s hydro-power potentials of 35 waterfalls, natural gas and huge coal deposits in southern Mindoro,” Valencia said. source
