ZAMBOANGA City Electric Cooperation (Zamcelco) president Elbert Atilano Sr. said they are contracting power to solve the shortage and end the seven to eight hours daily blackout in this southern port city.
All except one of the 200 Zamcelco members-consumers who attended the public consultation agreed to allow Zamcelco to proceed with the options offered by the Department of Energy (DOE).
The consultative meeting, called by Zamcelco last Tuesday was to get the people’s decision whether or not to agree with the options offered by DOE Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla during the recent Zamboanga Power Forum.
The option is to contract power with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) but the member-consumers must be willing to pay a higher price.
Atilano said at least 32 megawatts (MW) additional power would be contracted following the approval of the majority of the members-consumers who attended the consultation.
Atilano said the rate impact for those using an average of 100-Kilowatt monthly would be an additional cost of between P300 to P500 a month.
However, Atilano said that the Energy Regulatory Commission would be the final arbiter in setting the rates during public hearings that will be held.
The 32-MW additional power that Zamcelco is set to take in per options that the DOE presented include power sale agreements with Mapalad Power Corporation, Southern Philippines Power Corporation, and 10-MW modular generator sets that will be contracted with a private company that will be facilitated by the San Ramon Power Inc.
There will be no more additional consultation since the next step would be the ERC hearings, Atilano said. (Bong Garcia) source
