Sunwest Water and Electric Co. Inc. has started supplying electricity from its recently completed 600-kilowatt mini-hydropower plant in Sorsogon province.
“The power plant started to generate and distribute power to Sorsogon II Electric Coorperative in mid-August,” Suweco president Jose Silvestre Natividad said in a statement.
The 600-kW Cawayan upper mini-hydro plant with an estimated generation capacity of 2.786 gigawatt-hours annually is located in Barangay Guinlajon, Sorsogon City. The mini-hydro project cost around P80 million to complete.
The mini-hydro project is a joint venture project between Suweco and Sorsogon II Electric Cooperative. Suweco under the agreement is responsible for the rehabilitation, development and operation of the power plant.
Soesogon II Electric general manager Percival Alvarez said the power generated by the Cawayan mini-hydro plant was a significant contribution to the peak demand of 12.406 MW in Sorsogon.
Natividad said Suweco would develop hydro potentials and help electric cooperatives to rehabilitate and improve their existing generating capacities.
“We develop projects regardless of size as we believe that in unison, these small projects will provide a big contribution to our communities through all the direct and indirect benefits brought about by our projects to our host communities. Thus, we provide window for a better way of life and better future where communities coexists with a vibrant ecosystem,” Natividad said. source
