ABOITIZ Power Corporation, the power generation and distribution arm of Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV), has already begun their exploration of geothermal sites in two areas around Mt. Apo.
In a statement furnished to Sun.Star Davao, the company said they have started with the "first phase" of the work program after it was awarded Geothermal Renewable Energy Service Contracts (GRESC) by the Department of Energy last year.
The two areas around Mt. Apo spans around North Cotabato, Davao del Sur and Davao City.
"We are now implementing Work Program approved by the Department of Energy. This phase includes project introduction to relevant local government units and stakeholders," said Artemio Magnayon, Vice President for Business Development of Aboitiz Power, in a statement.
He said they will just conduct surface exploration and stressed that "there will be no construction of any kind that will commence." Also he said the company will also involve all concerned stakeholders in the project.
"We believe that the project's success depends on the support of our neighbors," Magnayon said.
The statement said the project is "aligned with AboitizPower's right-mix strategy in its power generation business which pushes for maximization of renewable energy potential as long as it is available and affordable, while utilizing fossil-based power generation to ensure reliability."
Earlier, Ma. Victoria Placer, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Davao del Sur investments promotion officer, who was a guest during the Davao Business Forum at Dermpath at SM City Davao, bared that company will be exploring geothermal sites in the province.
Aboitiz Power currently produces some 1,191 MW of renewable energy, making them one of the biggest renewable energy producers in the country. (RJL) source
