ABOITIZ Power Corp. (AboitizPower) said its 300-megawatt Therma South Energy Project in Mindanao has hit the 88% completion mark and remains on track to be operational by the first half of 2015.
THE THERMA South coal-fired power plant will provide 300 megawatts for the area around Davao City. This is a view of the plant construction site provided by Black&Veatch, the plant’s project and commissioning manager.
“As of June 2014, the power plant project is 88% complete with more than 3,500 workers on site working round-the-clock on the project,” AboitizPower said in a statement.
“We are looking forward to our testing and commissioning phase this year,” Therma South President and Chief Operating Officer Benjamin A. Cariaso, Jr. was quoted as saying in the statement.
The power company said electric cooperatives which have supply contracts with its subsidiary, Therma South, Inc., include those from the Zamboanga peninsula, the Davao region, the Caraga region, Cotabato, Saranggani, and Bukidnon.
“By being baseload, Therma South can operate almost 24/7 and is not dependent on weather conditions. This is vital in complementing Mindanao’s power supply which is heavily dependent on hydro which supplies 51% of the island’s supply,” AboitizPower said.
“During summer months and extreme dry weather, Mindanao’s power supply is extremely hampered [by] the low water levels in the Agus and Pulangi hydro power plants,” the company added. source
