THE 300-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Cebu being built by Aboitiz Power Corp. (AboitizPower) is expected to be fully operational within four years’ time.
In its latest quarterly report, AboitizPower said that the notice to proceed (NTP) with all engineering procurement and construction (EPC) activities for the project will be issued by December.
A limited NTP -- involving engineering design and detailed subsurface site investigations -- was issued in May after the EPC contract was awarded to Hyundai Engineering Company Ltd.
The P41-billion project -- involving two 150-MW coal plant units -- will be undertaken through Therma Visayas, Inc.
“Turnover of the first unit is targeted for yearend 2017, with the second following three months thereafter,” AboitizPower said.
The coal project, located in Sitio Looc, Barangay Bato in Toledo City will utilize steam turbines and circulating fluidized bed boilers.
The project site for the project was acquired in December 2011 and an environmental compliance certificate for the plant was secured in May last year.
AboitizPower is the power generation and distribution arm of Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc., which in turn serves as the listed holding firm of the Aboitiz family.
Besides the coal plant in Cebu, the company is also building a 300-MW coal-fired plant at a site straddling Davao City and Davao del Sur. The plant is scheduled to be operational next year.
Scheduled to also start this year is the 420-MW expansion of the Pagbilao coal plant in Quezon. -- Claire-Ann Marie C. Feliciano source
