SAN LORENZO, Guimaras -- Circumferential provincial roads in at least four barangays in San Lorenzo and two barangays in Sibunag town were destroyed due to a windmill project of Trans-Asia Renewable Energy Corporation (Tarec).
Heavy equipment and vehicles destroyed the roads in Barangay Zaldivar to Barangay Pina to Barangay Suclaran in San Lorenzo.
Governor Samuel Gumarin said residents will temporarily have to bear the consequence of destroyed roads in return for development and stable electric power supply generated by the windmills being put up by Tarec, a subsidiary of Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp.
The energy firm is building a total of 27 windmills and wind turbines costing P6.7 billion that are expected to generate 54 megawatts by 2015.
The first phase will cover four barangays of Cabungahan, Suclaran, M. Chavez and Cabano with 18 windmills constructed along open spaces and hills to be completed and commissioned by November 30, 2014.
The second phase will cover the rest of the windmills in barangays of Sibunag town to start by December 2014.
Gumarin assured the Provincial Government will not allow the energy firm to just go away after the construction of the windmills and turbines.
A provision in the contract between Tarec and the Municipal Government of San Lorenzo strongly stipulated the corporate social responsibility of Tarec in rehabilitating the destroyed roads and bridges.
San Lorenzo Mayor Jimmy Gajo assured he will not receive the project to be turned over to the local government unit if the roads are not rehabilitated by Tarec.
Construction of the windmills started in August 2013 to be completed by early 2015. (Lydia C. Pendon) source
