A unit of Aboitiz
Power Corp. has initiated steps for the development of a hydroelectric power
facility in Kabayan, Benguet.
The project, to be
undertaken by Hedcor Bukidnon Inc., will produce at least 45 megawatts (MW),
Hedcor President and Chief Operating Officer Rene Ronquillo said.
“We are still in the
initial stage. Once we secure the necessary permits, it will be a go,” he told
reporters.
AboitizPower had
already secured regulatory approval from the Department of Energy for the 45-MW
Nalatang B hydropower Kabayan project.
The company has
received a Certificate of Registration from the Energy department as a
renewable energy (RE) developer, which will allow the project to move to the
pre-development stage.
AboitizPower, the
power arm of Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV), said the project is expected
to be completed in the first quarter of 2019.
The Nalatang B
project was awarded by state-owned PNOC Renewables Corp. (PNOC RC) through a
contractual joint venture scheme.
AboitizPower will be
primarily responsible for the development and construction of the power plant,
which PNOC-RC has said will cost $61 million.
Ronquillo also said
his firm was planning to expand their hydropower plants – the Bineng Hydro 1
and 2 — in La Trinidad, Benguet.
Hedcor is also
constructing two hydropower plants in Barangay Maluko, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon
with a combined target capacity of 68.8 MW.
