The electricity service delivery for
consumers in off-grid Burias Island in Masbate has been reinforced with the
deployment of a supply supplementing 300-kilowatt generating set (genset).
State-run National Power Corporation
(NPC), which has the function of providing power to off-grid domains, has
announced that the capacity of its plant in San Pascual, Masbate was increased
following the genset’s delivery.
The company has indicated that with
the supply shoring up, “we can now extend the service hours of the Burias
Island diesel power plant from 8 to 12 hours.”
That off-grid servicing facility
caters to the requirements of at least 1,857 households, according to data
provided by the state-owned power firm.
NPC added that by 2016, “the power
plant may further extend to 16 hours” its duration of service to end-users.
The power firm said “with the new
genset, power services in the said municipality can now be enjoyed from 8:00 in
the morning until 12 midnight,” a service arrangement that will also enable
students on their computer use while in schools.
It has been NPC’s wish that with
this power capacity sprucing up, the area can also boost its tourism draw while
spurring further economic activities.
NPC president Gladys Cruz-Sta. Rita
has similarly committed that they will push for the electrification of nine
more barangays in the town.
The power firm has been extensively
working on extending the operating hours of its deployed gensets in various
off-grid areas – at least to 12 hours if the 24-hour operating cycle cannot be
achieved yet in most.
NPC has emphasized that it will
distribute 62 more gensets in jurisdictions of the Small Power Utilities Group
(SPUG) that takes the core of its residual function following the privatization
of the bulk of its power assets.
The power firm currently services
around 800,000 households via its 290 SPUG power facilities spread through
different islands.
