MANILA Electric Co.
(Meralco) has commissioned a new substation in Quezon City that is expected to
improve power service to big commercial establishments.
The distribution
utility commissioned the Banawe 115kV/34.5 kilovolts (kV) Gas-Insulated
Switchgear (GIS) which, it said, is best fit to serve power demand in
commercial areas and business centers because of its compact indoor-type
switchgears, less maintenance feature, and aesthetics.
The new substation also
employs the latest and proven technologies which are ready for smart-grid
applications such as distribution automation equipment and digital protective
devices.
“This facility will
provide additional capacity to serve the growing power requirements in the
areas of Balintawak, Diliman and San Francisco Del Monte in Quezon City,”
Meralco first vice president and head of networks Ronnie L. Aperocho said.
“This substation is
safe, efficient and has automation capabilities, which is more responsive
during operational contingencies,” Aperocho said.
“Among the commercial
establishments that will benefit from this are Capitol Medical Center, Puregold
Supermarket, Orion Wire Cable Inc., and Container Corporation of the
Philippines, among other core customers,” added Alfredo S. Panlilio, Meralco
senior vice president and head of customer retail services and corporate
communications.
Panlilio also thanked
the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for approving the project under the 3rd
Regulatory Period of the Performance-Based Regulation (PBR).
“This is part of
Meralco’s ‘smart grid journey’ to make its infrastructure more responsive to
customer needs. It is also a testament to the common goal of ERC and Meralco to
continuously improve electric service to the customers through the use of
innovative technology,” he said.
