Baguio City — A
500-megawatt pumped storage hydropower project is being eyed in the
municipality of Kibungan, Benguet – a P35-billion investment by a South
Korea-subsidized firm that promises to ensure power supply for Luzon.
“We are optimistic it
will prosper as we are trying to follow all the government process in attaining
the approval from the barangay to national government level,” Kim Howen,
chairman of the board of the COHECO Badeo Corporation, told The Manila
Bulletin.
Kim said the power
plant is aimed at providing a complete and strategic solution to the thinning
power reserves in the country. It is expected to produce more power output as
compared to the regions other hydro power dams.
He said the project has
already gained 100-percent support from the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of
Kibungan and that they are now partnering with the National Commission on
Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) in conducting community consultations in areas that
will be affected.
In addressing
environmental concerns, Kim said the project is 99% environment friendly,
explaining that the Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant technology, which sees
operation in his country, with 10 similar plants and 1 producing 1000 MW is
highly feasible in Kibungan because of its elevation.
