Brownouts hit Metro Cebu anew

Sunstar Cebu
THE lack of power in Metro Cebu was aggravated yesterday by maintenance work on the Luzon-Visayas link.
"The Cebu-Negros-Panay grid already lacks power supply of up to 150 megawatts (mw), but there is supposed to be additional power from Luzon but the link is under maintenance," said Ethel Natera, Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) spokesperson.
The power deficit yesterday afternoon reached 200 mw.
“There is lack of power supply because of power plants that are not available. I can't pinpoint which power plants but these are located in Leyte,” said Natera.
“We are also getting from NPC (National Power Corp.) and they are providing only one-half of (what our) contract with them (states),” she said.
Some of the areas hit by one hour-long brownouts were the towns of Consolacion and Liloan; Barangays Maguikay, Casuntingan and Paknaan in Mandaue City; and Barangay Mabolo in Cebu City.
Natera said the power utility firm has been coping with low power supply for the past weeks.
“We were able to cope through our direct suppliers, the independent power producers and participating interruptible load customers (PILCs),” she said.
“The PILCs are customers with big generators, who, instead of getting power from Veco, they use their own generators,” she said.
Power supply was expected to return to normal last night.
“As of now (yesterday), there are no more brownouts,” she said.
