Lightning caused total blackout

Sunstar Bacolod
A LIGHTNING that hit a National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) substation caused a total blackout Thursday in Northern Negros and Panay area.
NGCP explained that the lightning hit its Mabinay substation, causing the Kabankalan-Bacolod transmission lines 1 & 2 to trip.
Cheryl Tortal, public relations officer of Ceneco, said the total blackout in Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco)'s coverage areas started at 9:40 a.m. Power was restored at 11:40 a.m. in some areas.
The incident also caused a total blackout in Victorias-Manapla-Cadiz Rural Electric Service Cooperative Inc (VRESCO) in Panay areas.
Tortal also explained that at past 6:00 p.m. Thursday, another power interruption took place in Barangay Tangub and other neighboring areas, which was caused by a power shortage of 10 megawatts by Green Core geothermal power plant.
Green Core immediately made up for the power shortage from its alternate source at the Kepco Salcon diesel-fueled plant in Iloilo.
Total stated that the power interruptions and power outage in Ceneco's coverage area have nothing to do with the testing of a coal-fired power plant in Iloilo, as the distribution facility is not getting power from that coal plant in Iloilo.
She added Ceneco was not also informed about the coal plant test operation in Iloilo. (Teresa Ellera-Dulla)
