Mayor asks Guimaras mayors to monitor coal plant

Sunstar Iloilo
MAYOR Jed Patrick Mabilog has asked the municipal mayors of Buenavista and Jordan in Guimaras province to monitor the coal-fired power plant and report any foul odor from the plant.
Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) is retesting the operation of its coal-fired plant on Thursday and Friday to determine what caused the foul odor in its first fire-test conducted last month.
Mabilog said the plant is currently on the process of steam blowing as part of the fire-test and the wind direction is going to Guimaras. He has called Buenavista Mayor Samuel Gumarin and Jordan Mayor Cresente Chavez to report immediately if there is any foul odor emanating from the steam.
PEDC has already completed its first 82 megawatt (MW) plant out of the 164 MW first coal fired power plant in Western Visayas. The first plant is expected to be fully operational before the end of this year and the second plant will be completed by January next year to give sufficient power supply to the city and electric cooperatives in the province of Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Antique and Guimaras.
Residents leaving nearby the plant protested during the first fire test because of the foul odor it emitted. Some residents were even brought to the hospital and a child reportedly died due to pneumonia aggravated by the foul odor.
PEDC officials could not determine the cause and from where the foul odor came from and decided for a second testing to settle the issue.(LCP)
