PUBLICLY LISTED Basic Energy Corp. has tapped Filtech Energy Drilling Corp. to conduct a prefeasibility study for its planned 20-megawatt Mabini geothermal energy project in Batangas.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Basic Energy said the prefeasibility study would consist of technical predevelopment, technical development, environmental and social, financial and economics, project schedule and implementation, as well as risk assessment.
According to Basic Energy, the study would validate the Controlled Magneto-Telluric (CSMT) survey that Basic Energy conducted last year and provide a more detailed geophysical and geologic evaluation, determine the best drilling locations, and simulate the technical, operational and economic feasibility of a 20-MW geothermal power plant, assuming a success drilling phase.
Prospective sites
With the CSMT survey, Basic Energy was able to look into some 60 preidentified, prospective geothermal sites. It was completed in May last year.
The Mabini geothermal service contract was awarded to Basic Energy by the Department of Energy on July 10, 2008. Basic Energy had then committed to invest $3.15 million for initial exploration activities.
Under the exploration program, Basic Energy was expected to conduct geophysical and geological surveys covering 3,481 hectares in the Calumpan Peninsula in Mabini, Batangas.
The company’s initial assessments then indicated that the area had a good potential for power generation that could be developed within a two- to three-year period considering the existence of adequate infrastructure, adjacency to transmission lines and a strong power demand in the area.
