Power coop to build own mini hydro

THE Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) is ready to develop a mini hydro power plant in Buguias, Benguet.
General Manager Gerardo Verzosa said engineers are completing the feasibility study for the establishment of a mini hydro power plant.
Once the study is completed, a consultation to obtain the community’s free, prior and informed consent will be conducted.
Verzosa said alternative sources of energy could potentially reduce the cost of power. Beneco estimates that generation cost will be reduced to P4.30 per kilowatt hour for the first ten years and further be reduced to P1 per kilowatt hour on the 11th year.
The proposed power plants could generate three megawatts of clean energy. Development would cost P320 million.
Verzosa said the Beneco would proceed with the preliminary requirements, 18 months after the National Electrification Administration (NEA) approves its loan as 90 percent of the development cost would be loaned from the NEA. (Rimaliza OpiƱa)
