Solons chide Meralco for brownout threat

Bayan Muna Reps. Neri Colmenares and Carlos Zarate said the Meralco should not blackmail the power consumers since the government could step in and take over their operations so as not to disrupt the delivery of basic services to the people.
“The government can takeover in case of emergency. I hope they would not push through with their threat. The people will not take this not because of under supply but due to commercial purposes,” Colmenares told reporters during the House minority bloc’s weekly press conference.
Zarate branded the threat issued by Meralco as a “clear blackmail”.
Colmenares and Zarate agreed that the government should expedite its legal action against the officials of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and power generators who were behind the skyrocketing power rates.
Marikina City Rep. Miro Quimbo, chairman of the House committee on ways and means cautioned his colleagues against making such proposal, saying that it would definitely shoo away foreign investors.
Last December 23, the SC barred Meralco from imposing its rate adjustments by issuing a 60-day temporary restraining order (TRO).  source
