NGCP energizes Davao line

THE National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said on Friday that it has improved the 138-kilovolt (kV) line from Maramag, Bukidnon, to Bunawan, Davao City, to improve the stability and reliability of power-transmission services to Davao and other southern Mindanao areas.
The NGCP said in a statement that the Maramag-Bunawan Line 1, with a rated capacity of 330 megawatts (MW), was energized and looped to the grid on the first week of October, and Line 2, which is capable of carrying another 330 MW, has been energized as well.
NGCP maintained that its transmission facilities in Mindanao—transmission towers, lines and substations—have been fully operational and ready to deliver available power from the generators to the grid users.
The NGCP said both backup lines are intended to reinforce and improve the current primary lines and increase transfer capacity from the north to the south of Mindanao.
The NGCP said about 90 percent of the total generation in the grid comes from the northern part of Mindanao.  The Mindanao grid was designed for a “two-way” flow of supply that is evenly dispersed between north and south.
To alleviate the stress placed on the lines, the NGCP said it prioritized the completion of the Maramag-Bunawan lines. However, even with this improvement, it is essential for the generation supply to be balanced between the north and south portions of Mindanao. More base-load plants must be located in the south.
