BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines - One of the leading power firms in the country planted more than 30,000 forest tree seedlings in at least 10 provinces simultaneously over the weekend as part of its environmental protection and conservation program.
The Cebu-based Aboitiz Group of companies, which owns and operates three of Luzon’s major dams, mobilized about 2,000 of its employees and volunteers nationwide for the simultaneous tree planting, the second to be initiated by the firm since last year.
According to Mike Hosillos, the firm’s vice president for corporate services, they were able to plant some 30,000 various species of seedlings yesterday in about 17 hectares of land in at least 10 provinces in the country where Aboitiz businesses operate.
The firm held its first simultaneous nationwide tree planting of the same number of seedlings on Oct. 10 last year. This came after it did a pioneering carbon emission inventory, indicating the need to plant one million trees over time to offset carbon emissions.
“(This) is part of (our firms’) efforts to not just promote a healthy lifestyle but also solidify its commitment to help leave a healthy home for the next generation,” Hosillos said.

The firm said the planting sites were Cebu’s reforestation park in Barangay Tabunan, which is part of its protected landscape; Subic’s Mt. Sta. Rita reforestation area; Makiling-Banahaw area in Laguna; Antipolo, Rizal; Tiwi, Albay and Davao.
Last year, the same volume of forestry seedlings were also planted in various parts of the country, including Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Ifugao and Benguet where the critical watersheds of the firm’s Magat dam, Ambuklao dam and Binga dam are located.
