THE proposed 300-megawatt coal-fired plant of the AboitizPower Corp. is set to operate starting May 2014, a firm's top official said Tuesday.
Manuel Orig, AboitizPower vice president for Mindanao affairs, told reporters that a total of 23 councilors voted in favor of the resolution endorsing the establishment of the P25-billion power plant.
Public hearings for the AboitizPower's power plant proposal dragged on for nearly four months due to health and environment issues from proponents and opposing environmental groups.
The 31-hectare property will form part of more than 50-hectare land where the coal-fired power will be constructed while the Environmental Impact Assessment is still on process. After a 23-1 votes at the City Council in favor of the coal-fired power plant, the next legal obstacle the firm should endure is the reclassification of the 31-hectare land in Barangay Binugao area from protected medium-density industrial area to protected high-density industrial area.
Aside from the various permits and certificate, the firm will have to secure an Environmental Compliance Certificate from the Department of Natural Resources.
Among the requirements of the ECC are: two recommendations from Barangays (Binugao and Inawayan); and recommendations from Davao City and Sta. Cruz town in Davao del Sur.
Since all of the requirements required for the ECC have been issued, there's no stopping the construction of the controversial coal-fired power plant.
