Council may decide on coal plant next week

Thursday, June 2, 2011

THE Davao City Council might be able to come up with a decision on the proposed 300-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant by the AboitizPower Corp next week.
In a phone interview, Councilor Pilar Braga, who chairs the City Council committee on energy, transportation and communication -- one of the four committees tasked to conduct deliberation on Aboitiz's proposal -- said their decision is a major concern, not only of the city but of the entire Mindanao.
"Pakinggan nalang ninyo next week sa paglabas namin sa decision (Just wait for our decision next week)," Braga told Sun.Star Davao.
She said Councilor Victorio U. Advincula Jr., majority floor leader, said the entire City Council is still awaiting the consolidated recommendation of the four committees on the proposed P25-billion coal-fired power plant in Binugao, Toril.
Advincula said their decision, whatever it may be, will not be influenced by any person, even by Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who was repeatedly accused by some cause-oriented groups of influencing the city's lawmaking-body.
The controversial coal-fired power plant, which will be built in the boundary of Barangay Binugao in Davao City and Barangay Inawayan in Sta. Cruz Davao del Sur, generated various reactions from different sectors.
Both barangays have passed a resolution allowing the establishment of the power plant in their area, citing its economic benefits to their locality.
Duterte himself readily gave his approval to the project, saying the city and the entire Mindanao badly need it in order to move forward to the future.
The vice mayor said for as long as there are mitigating measures on the plants effect on the environment and the people living around the vicinity of the plant, then there is no reason to bar it approval.
