MANILA, Philippines - In line with the country’s goal of attaining energy self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability, the Philippines will launch the first National Renewable Energy Program (NREP).
Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras said the NREP is consistent with Republic Act 9513 or the Renewable Energy Act which mandates the full development and use of the country’s RE resources.
Almendras said the NREP outlines the national renewable energy targets and trajectories in the energy and power mix for the short- to long-term.
NREP also contains a framework for action, existing and future measures, instruments and policies for the promotion of renewable energy and a roadmap which will guide efforts toward actualizing the market penetration targets of each RE resource in the country.
On June 14, the Department of Energy (DOE) will unveil the NREP to step up the momentum for RE development.
Almendras said the launch is aimed at forging strategic partnerships and collaboration with key stakeholders to promote and support the program.
“The NREP brings to a higher plane of action the country’s RE agenda, thus bringing the country a step closer to its vision of sustainable energy for more people in our country,” he said.
The program, he said, would likewise promote wide awareness on the massive efforts being undertaken to enlist public support to the program.
The DOE will be supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in this endeavor by providing technical assistance on crafting the NREP.
In the launch, it is also expected that RE will be recognized as a vital part of a long-term strategy and integrated approach for growth and poverty alleviation.
“As such, aside from the large investments and hundred-megawatt projects, equal importance should be given to small projects that will improve the lives of remote or poor communities,” according to the NREP agenda.
It was noted that country’s RE potentials, estimated at more than 200,000 megawatts, will help achieve energy security and provide clean energy for consumers.
The government will likewise maximize development of RE to fasttrack and expand development opportunities in the rural areas.
Based on the RE roadmap, it will help translate clean energy opportunities into long term benefits for the people.
