DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Davao City council approved on second reading Tuesday afternoon the establishment of a 300-megawatt, coal-fired power plant in Barangay Binugao, Toril district by the Aboitiz Power Corp.
Majority of the 23 councilors endorsed the project while only one voted no.
Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who presides over the city council, said the construction of a coal-fired power plant is a practical solution to the power crisis hounding Mindanao for the past years.
Mindanao was hit by massive power outages last year brought about by low water levels in Pulangi River in Bukidnon and Lake Lanao in Lanao del Norte, the main sources of hydroelectric power in the South.
In explaining their votes, the city councilors cited the increasing demand for power brought about by continuing progress and development, particularly in this city.
But they stressed that Aboitiz Power Corp. should be able to institute measures to ensure that environment and safety concerns are addressed.
Aboitiz officials also submitted to the city council a proposal to convert the power plant site in Barangay Binugao from high-density residential area to high-density industrial area. |
