Universal Robina Corp., the food manufacturing unit of conglomerate JG Summit Holdings Inc., plans to spend $60 million to construct 40-megawatt biomass co-generation power plants in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.
URC chairman James Go said in an interview following a special stockholders’ meeting the company would use a portion of the electricity to be generated by the power plant and sell some 16 MW to 20 MW to the grid.
Go said the power project would use bagasse, a byproduct of the company’s sugar milling facility, to generate power.
Phase one involves the construction of 4-MW to 5-MW plant, which will be operational by end of 2014, while phase two of the project will be completed over the next two to three years.
The company’s venture into power business will complement its sugar business and will also entitle it government incentives.   source
