RENEWABLE ENERGY resource developer Sunwest Water and Electric Co. (SUWECO) expects to start commercial operations of its 600-kilowatt (kW) hydropower plant in Sorsogon City in August, a top company official said on Friday.

“We are commissioning the project starting next week. That’s on track with our target. So that will be completed in August,” SUWECO President Jose Silvestre M. Natividad said in a text message when asked for updates on the project.

“First week of August, the project will be in commercial operations already.”

Mr. Natividad said the Cawayan Upper mini hydro project, which is located in Barangay Guinlajon in Sorsogon City, costs about P80 million.

He added that the 600-kW power facility will generate around 2.786 gigawatt-hours of electricity every year.

PRIORITY
The project is intended to contribute additional power supply to several areas in Sorsogon.

“We are negotiating with SORECO II (Sorsogon II Electric Cooperative, Inc.) for the output of the power plant,” Mr. Natividad said.

SORECO II distributes electricity to Sorsogon City; and municipalities of Donsol, Pilar, Castilla, Gubat, Barcelona and Prieto Diaz, all in the province of Sorsogon.

Mr. Natividad had said last March that SUWECO’s priority is to develop hydropower projects and help electricity cooperatives secure additional supply for their power needs.

“We develop projects regardless of size as we believe that, in unison, these small projects will provide a big contribution to our communities...” Mr. Natividad had said.

SUWECO, which was incorporated in 2005, currently operates two mini hydro power plants with a total capacity of 3.6 megawatts (MW) in the province of Catanduanes.
