The Mindanao Development Authority said Wednesday Mindanao will obtain most of its energy from coal-fired power plants by 2018.
MinDA director for investment promotions and public affairs Romeo Montenegro told reporters Mindanao needed to build power plants from all sources, including coal, to meet growing demand and attract investors.
MinDA predicted that by 2018, coal would account for 56 percent of the energy mix, followed by renewable energy at 30 percent and oil at 14 percent.
Renewable energy currently account for 59 percent of the region’s energy mix, bulk of which comes from the Agus-Pulangi hydro complex, followed by oil at 31 percent and coal at 10 percent.
Committed projects in Mindanao include the 15-MW bunker-fired peaking plant of EEI Power Corp. in Tagum City, Davao del Norte; 15-MW diesel power plant of Mapalad Energy Generation Corp.; 300-MW coal plant of Therma South Energy Inc.; 200-MW coal plant of Sarangani Energy Corp.; and 50-MW Mindanao 3 geothermal plant of Energy Development Corp. source
