National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said Wednesday it began the construction of a 117-kilometer power transmission line in the Cagayan Valley region.

The company said the Santiago-Tuguegarao 230-kilovolt transmission line project would expand and reinforce the North Luzon transmission corridor.  It involves adding a second circuit to the existing 230-kV line from Santiago, Isabela to Tuguegarao City in Cagayan province, which spans about 117 kilometers.
The project aims to address electric transmission reliability issues in the event the existing Santiago-Gamu and Gamu-Tuguegarao 230-kV line segments experience outages, the company said.
“NGCP sees this project as a response to the continuous increase of supply and load customers in the area. Cagayan has also been identified for its renewable energy potential, particularly for wind power. This project will ensure the stability of the transmission backbone once new power plants in the region are connected to the grid,” National Grid spokesman Cynthia Perez-Alabanza said.
The existing line segments become geographically vulnerable to unplanned outages, especially during typhoon season because it is located along the country’s eastern seaboard.
The project also involves the expansion and upgrade of equipment at the Santiago and Gamu substations in Isabela and Tuguegarao substation in Cagayan Valley.   source
