Senate invites ERC chief to explain power hike

The Senate energy committee has invited former Pampanga Rep. Zenaida Ducut, chairperson of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), to explain during its public hearing why the commission approved the “record-breaking” increase of electricity rates asked by the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) for the next three months starting this December.
The invitation was sent by Sen. Sergio R. Osmena III, energy committee chairman, who wanted Ducut to appear before the committee although she had previously snubbed last week’s public hearings on the same issue by the House of Representatives energy committee.
The public hearing was sought by Sen. Antonio “Sonny’’ Trillanes IV.
Although she did not appear before the House energy committee chaired by Rep. Reynaldo Umali, Ducut sent ERC Commissioner Josefina M. Asirit and ERC Executive Director Francis Juan to represent her.
Aside from Ducut, the committee also sent invitations to other power players to appear in the hearing.
They are Department of Energy (DoE) Secretary Jericho Petilla and the heads of Meralco, Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WSEM), Power Sector Assets Liabilities and Management (PSALM) and of the generating companies.   source
