Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. on Monday questioned the loyalty of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) as its decision to grant “the highest jump” in electricity rates favored privately-owned power companies over the interest of the Filipino people.
“That is why we cannot help but wonder whether there were conspiracies during the process,’’ Revilla said in supporting a resolution by Sen. Antonio “Sonny’’ Trillanes IV asking the Senate energy committee chaired by Sen. Sergio R. Osmena to investigate the questionable power rate increase.
“In this light, it is just right for the Senate to summon the involved companies and agencies to shed light to the arising doubts and furies from the public towards the issue,” he said.
Revilla also said that “it is so insensitive of them to implement this at a time when everyone is still recovering from the recent calamities that hit our country.’’
“It not only failed to secure the welfare of the people but also failed to protect the consumers’ rights by burdening them with financial responsibility which is supposed to be handled by the government,’’ he added.
Revilla said he favors Trillanes’ warning to power plant operators that they may face criminal liabilities.
He cited reports that there was “connivance” among the three power producers to command the price of electricity in the spot market.
