Battery power plant eyed in Kabankalan

The AES Corp. BESS project can store up 40 megawatts (MW) of power for the Visayas grid.

Herrera said the facility is strategically placed in Negros Occidental to have a ready storage unit for the projected increase of solar projects in the Visayas region.

“This is true in the case of Visayas, there are a lot of photovoltaic (PVs) there, they want to develop more renewable energy into the grid," Herrera said.

AES Philippines Market business leader Neeraj Bhat said the technology will only serve as part of the ancillary service and will not be used for replacement of generation capacity sources.

"This is a different kind of product, this is not for generation. This is for ancillary services only," he said.

Bhat said they have suggested to the Department of Energy (DOE) to utilize the BESS technology in time for the reserve shortfall of 2014.

He added that the price will not be far from the usage of generator sets, through the implementation of the Interruptible Load Program (ILP).

Compared to generation plants, which may take half-a-day to run at full capacity, the BESS only needs the software to run at 200 milliseconds. The technology also has an advantage of not needing fuel to run.

Bhat said they are working the process with the NGCP, and they hope to complete the requirements by the end of the year, and proceed with the construction early next year.

The operation is expected to commence in the next nine to 12 months, he added. (NLG/With reports from PNA) source
