AT least 10,000 new
jobs will be created in both the upstream and downstream support industries
once the country’s electric vehicle (EV) industry is successfully developed,
the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) predicted.
“In fact, with enough
government support and incentives, the Philippines might just be the next EV
manufacturing hub in the region,” EVAP President Rommel Juan said.
The group has been
pushing for greater adoption of electric vehicles for public transport
application.
EVAP notes that its
members have rolled out EV transport projects in Boracay, Makati, Quezon City,
Muntinlupa, Alabang, Cavite and various university campuses in the National
Capital Region like Ateneo, De La Salle and UP.
Juan said they are
hoping that more local government units (LGUs) would get into the EV game next
year.
This can be done by
adopting more eco-friendly electric vehicle alternatives like electric jeepneys
and electric tricycles, he explained.
“We are reaching out
to more LGUs nationwide and enticing them to get into the EV bandwagon,” he
added.
He pointed out that
the adoption of more electric vehicles for public transport will significantly
reduce the carbon emissions in the country by 355,506 tons with the deployment
of 100,000 e-trikes alone.
“That is just a drop
in the bucket, considering there is a total of over 1.2 million regular
tricycles in operation nationwide today,” he said.
At the same time, the
group is also pushing for lowering the cost of the local manufacture electric
vehicles by the passage into into law of the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Bill,
which is still pending in Congress.
The group targets to
roll out at least 6,000 electric vehicles over the next three years.
Of this number, Juan
said 5,000 will be electric tricycles and 1,000 will be electric jeepneys.
