Iloilo City — By August 2016, the
P14-billion expansion of the Panay Energy Development Corp. (PEDC) here is
expected to provide an additional 150 megawatts (MWs) of coal-fired power for
the Visayas.
Jaime Azurin, executive vice
president of Global Business Power Corp. (GBP), said that its subsidiary, PEDC,
is confident of finishing the project and starting the generation of an
additional 150 MWs.
Engr. Nilo Madrid, GBP first vice
president for Panay operations, said the coal-fired power plant expansion
project is 73-percent completed and will undergo the commissioning phase prior
to its scheduled commercial operations in August.
PEDC operates the 164-MW coal-fired
power plant; and the additional 150-MW unit is being built adjacent to it in
the La Paz district, here.
PEDC mainly provides electricity to
private power distributor, Panay Electric Co. (PECO) in Iloilo City, as well as
electric cooperatives in Iloilo, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, and Guimaras provinces.
Azurin said the coal-fired power
plant expansion will further reduce electricity rates and bring reliable power
supply to Western Visayas region.
The 150-MW expansion project began
in March 2014. It was built to address the power demand in regional center of
Iloilo City and the rest of Panay Island as many areas are undergoing massive
commercial and residential development.
PEDC also provides power to other
Visayan islands as it is connected to the National Grid Corporation of the
Philippines (NGCP).
