MANILA, Philippines — Davao del
Norte Electric Cooperative Inc. (Daneco) will start constructing
electrification projects valued at P1.1 billion in November as part of efforts
to improve energy supply in the region.
Daneco broke ground on the 69
kilovolts overhead subtransmission line for a submarine cable connection; the
installation of the 72 kV submarine cable, and the 20 MVA substation on Samal
Island.
These projects will be financed by
the Bank of Commerce, a subsidiary of San Miguel Corp. (SMC).
The power coop is also working with
the local government units of Pantukan and Igacos and the National Grid Corp.
of the Philippines (NGCP) for the projects.
Daneco acting general manager Mario
Angelo Sotto said the installation of submarine cable would commence right
after the bidding process, and would be completed in one year.
He also assured there would be no
electricity rate change after completion of the project.
The submarine cable will run 11.5
kilometers from Pantukan, Compostela Valley to Aundanao, PeƱaplata in Igacos.
On the other hand, the 20 MVA
substation to be built in PeƱaplata, will cater to the growing power demand of
Samal Island.
“We are looking forward to a
reliable service, efficient system, and hopefully, affordable electricity rate,
if not cheap. This will realize economic and social development for all the
constituents of the two provinces of Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro,” said
National Electrification Administration chief Edgardo Masongsong.
Masongsong said the electrification
projects are expected to boost the economic and tourism activities on Samal
Island, and unlock many opportunities for the residents.
“The power demand on Samal Island
alone is expected to reach 35 megawatts (MW) from the existing 10 MW,” he said.
Meanwhile, Daneco also broke ground
for the construction of its new office building in Tagum City.
The new office building, which will
be funded by the NEA under its enhanced lending program, will be located in
Tipaz, Magugpo East, Tagum City. The two-story building is expected to be
completed in one year.
