Manila Times
More than 60 events are expected to be held in the Philippines as part of the largest environmental action in history on Sunday, with international climate change group 350.org leading some 7,000 Climate Work Parties in 180 countries in celebrating the 10/10/10 campaign.

According to the organizers of the events, different programs will be held from Luzon to Mindanao to amplify their resolve to work on local climate solutions and show that carbon-cutting measures are feasible if only the government leaders around the globe will act decisively.

The events will include tree planting near the coal-fired thermal plants and mining concessionaires and mangrove tree planting along the coastlines.
Over 1,500 people are expected to turn out to plant mangroves in Lasang, Davao City.

Luntiang Kabataan, a group of students based in Manila and Davao City is instrumental in organizing ECO-MOVES IN 2010, a mix of forum, exhibits, clean up, concert, in connection to the celebration of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity and spearheaded by 350.org and the United Nations Environment Programme along with Aksyon Mindanaw, CROSSCIENCE Club, Centerpoint Plaza and Calle cinco (C5) Victoria.

A 12-hour marathon of activities in Kiwalan, Iligan City will be held, starting with a forum on the mining operations of Iligan Cement Corp. and owned and operated by Lafarge and their failure to safeguard the health and environment of the people in the vicinity of the mining company.

The residents complained of air pollution, lack of access road for the residents and irresponsible storage system of the company’s coal. The blasting operations of the mining company also destroyed the water supply and drainage system of the communities surrounding the mining company.

The forum which will be held at Purok 11, Kiwalan, Iligan City will be followed by tree planting in Purok 16 where the mining operation is located.

Afterwhich is a candle-lighting at night as a tribute to the dead who are buried at the revered Maranao Cemetery that was desecrated by the mining operations nearby.

Another tree planting will happen in Dipolog City by Clean Up Dipolog and other nongovernment organizations and in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Zamboanga del Norte.

Meanwhile, Cebu City will host the “Run for your Lives” and the formation of the people to a giant 350 at the historic Fuente Osmena Circle.

The 10/10/10 campaign in Cebu City is being led by the Visayas Climate Action Now Network in collaboration with A2D Project, the University of the Philippines (UP) Luntian, UP Fine Arts Students Organization, Save TaƱon Strait Citizens’ Movement, University of San Carlos Sociology-Anthropology Department (USC), USC Kontra Quarry, University of Cebu, University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu Fair Trade Shop, Gasa sa Guso, Kinabuhi Central Visayas and FIDEC.

In Luzon, Baguio is already brimming with activities to drumbeat the fun run on 10/10/10 initiated by concerned individuals and groups. “We have more than 1000 participants to march down Session Road on 10/10/10.

Together with the farmers from Calaca, Agham Youth is organizing a tree planting work party event on October 10 dubbed “350ppm is Tree Hefty.”

They will plant 350 Trees of Hope in Calaca, Batangas as a symbolic action against the new coal power plant and to contribute in the mitigation of climate change. The fruit-bearing trees will also help augment the income of the poor farmers.

350.org organizers said they are expecting 100,000 trees planted around the globe, over 100 solar panels installed, hundreds of homes and buildings weatherized, cyclists to ride over 1,000 miles, and the citizens of Southeast Asia cleaning up at least 500 miles of coastline, pristine waterfalls and other water tributaries around the region.
