MANILA ELECTRIC CO. (Meralco) customers could see lower power bills this month after the distribution utility yesterday announced a three-centavo cut in its generation charge.

The P0.0313 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) adjustment brought the generation charge for May to P5.0161/kWh, the firm said in a statement.
"The decrease in the generation charge was due to lower Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) billings, National Power Corp. (Napocor) rates and independent power producer costs," it said.
WESM prices posted a drop of P1.61/kWh while power sourced from Napocor was cheaper by P0.0343/kWh. Independent power producer costs fell by P0.0102/kWh.
The lower generation charge means households that consume an average of 100 kWh per month will see a P3.13 decrease in their bills. Those consuming 200 kWh -- the utility’s biggest customer segment at a third of the total, will save P6.26 in their May billing. Those that consume 300 kWh will see their costs fall by P9.39.
Meralco said it sourced 45.8% of its power from Napocor and 50.5% from independent power producers. The WESM contributed 3.8%.
Shares in Meralco closed yesterday at P240, down 0.415% from P24. -- Emilia Narni J. David
