Mindoro green energy pushed

An Aquino ally in the House of Representatives on Tuesday said a geothermal power plant will be opened in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, to make the island-province self-sufficient in renewable power amid outages and high electricity cost.
Oriental Mindoro Rep. Rodolfo Valencia said the 20MW geothermal project in barangay Montelago signaled the entry of Jose Leviste Jr., a mining businessman, into the renewable energy sector.
Leviste’s Constellation Energy Corp. has partnered with the Emerging Power Resource Holdings Inc. and Netherland-based IF Technology to put up the project, he said.
Valencia said Leviste and his international and local partners had met with him and his local officials “to discuss details of their green energy project,” which is set to be commissioned by 2014.
“Island grids like Oriental Mindoro, isolated by sea from the main grids, are mostly plagued by astronomical power rates because of the high cost of diesel or bunker fuels. Until the introduction of renewable energy sources that include wind, solar, bio-mass and geothermal power, the isolated grids have to rely on expensive gas-powered turbines,” said Valencia, chairman of the House committee on Housing and Urban Development.
Leviste, in a statement, said the project has made the required Controlled Source Magnetotelluric  Survey.
CEC has a Geothermal Renewable Energy Service Contract granted by the Department of Energy targetting a 70MW output.
“Once the Montelago plant is operational it will be a big factor in providing a reliable and secure source of power and in stabilizing retail electricity rates. The generation component of overall power cost is normally the highest, and even more so in the island grids,”Leviste said.
Valencia said Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative Inc., service provider, covered 14 towns and Calapan City on a 48MW supply contract.   source
