As many of the new power projects are being constructed across Panay island sites, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is simultaneously reinforcing the area’s transmission backbone with investment allotment of P1.022 billion.
In a statement to the media, the company noted that the Panay transmission backbone will be strengthened along two components – the transmission line and substation.
NGCP primarily laid down that the reinforcement work is being pushed based on regulatory approvals “to accommodate generation capacity coming from Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC) and other generators in the island.”
For the transmission line core of the project, it will involve the construction of a 97-circuit kilometer (ckm) of 138-kilovolt and 69 kV lines, which will all be installed out of steel tower structures.
“The 138-kV line will extend from the Sta. Barbara substation in Iloilo to the new San Jose substation in Antique,” the company said.
The 69-kV line, on the other, will stretch from the San Jose substation and will cut in to the San Jose-Kibalom line, which is also rated at 69-kV.
“The construction of the new lines is expected to prevent overloading of the existing Sta. Barbara-Sibalom 69-kV line, which in turn, will reinforce the transmission network of Panay,” NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza said.
For the substation component of the uprate, it will necessitate the construction of a new facility at the San Jose substation as well as the expansion of the Sta. Barbara substation.
“A 50-megavolt ampere transformer will be placed at the San Jose substation while new power circuit breakers will be installed in the latter,” the company has emphasized.
NGCP has noted that the project’s completion and commissioning are targeted within the year. Construction rates to completion are now at 97-percent for the transmission line and 73-percent for the substation.   source
