Transmission operator National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has completed the repair of the Muntinlupa substation that will further enhance the reliability of the transmission grid during the May elections.
“We prioritized this project because Muntinlupa Substation caters to the southern part of Metro Manila and provinces nearby where we have large customers. It is also part of our Luzon Voltage Improvement Project, which helps in our preparation for the upcoming national and local elections,” National Grid spokesman Cynthia Alabanza said.
National Grid’s operations and maintenance group completed the replacement of the substation’s capacitor bank on March 19 after a damage on Feb. 20.
A capacitor bank is a substation component that improves system voltage whenever there is a need to control the voltage due to frequency fluctuations.
The company said the capacitor cells had deteriorated and been replaced several times in the past due to oil leakage.
National Grid, operator of the country’s transmission network, decided to replace the whole capacitor bank instead of replacing just the damaged capacitor cells to ensure the integrity of the whole capacitor bank.
The project was finished 11 days ahead of the original March 30 target because of the combined efforts of the various technical units of National Grid. The contract cost for the materials of the project is placed at P9.7 million.
The National Electrification Administration earlier ordered all electric power cooperatives to ensure power availability and reliability in their areas during the elections.
NEA, in a memorandum said, enjoined cooperatives to implement a load management program from May 10 to May 14. NEA supervises the operations of more than 100 electric cooperatives around the country.
“In view of the many challenges confronting the electric cooperatives under the deregulated environment, particularly in the supply of electricity, the Department of Energy deems it necessary to ensure the continuous supply of electric power throughout the country before, during and after the May elections,” NEA said.  source
