VILLANUEVA, Misamis Oriental -- The ongoing repair works for Unit 2 of Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant is on schedule.
Unit 1 of STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) 210 megawatts (MW) went online and was synchronized to the Mindanao grid at 2 p.m. of August 13, about 34 hours ahead of schedule.
Steag's Unit 1, which has a net generating capacity of 105 MW, was shut down for a scheduled preventive maintenance last July 27.
Meanwhile, SPI Plant Manager, Dr. Carsten Evers, estimates the ongoing repair works for Unit 2 to be completed on or before September 15.
Unit 2, which also has a net generating capacity of 105 MW, went offline last July 29 following some technical problems.
Dr. Evers said that parallel maintenance works for Unit 2 are now being carried out side by side with the repair works to optimize the time and bring the unit back to service as soon as possible.
This move supersedes earlier plans to shut down Unit 2 for preventive maintenance as originally scheduled on September 21 to October 27.
Dr. Evers expressed confidence that despite the unplanned shut down of unit 2, SPI is expected to sustain its remarkably high plant-wide availability performance.
Since start of full commercial operations in November 2006, SPI sustained an average availability of 93 percent and less than one percent rate for unplanned outage.
SPI has delivered more than 9.6 billion kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity to the Mindanao grid representing about 20 percent of the island's total electric power supply.

SPI is a leader in highly advanced coal power generation technology. It was established as a special purpose company to finance, build, operate and maintain Mindanao's 1st and so far the only coal-fired power plant in the island.
