Igacos faces power crisis

THE Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) is facing an impending power crisis due to the internal conflict within the Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Daneco), which supplies electricity on the island.
"It is sad to note that our efforts to save the power situation have been messed up by the intramurals of the two factions within Daneco," said Igacos city administrator Cleto Jon Gales, Jr.
He said the island is currently being powered by a 30-year-old submarine cable with a capacity of 5 megawatts. The cable has experienced some five to seven major faults in its service and may giveup anytime.
To avoid the impending crisis, they've made the problem an urgent agenda and are looking for a sustainable and reliable power provider.
He said two years ago, they had talks between the Davao Light and Power Company for the eventual transfer of operations in Igacos. The talks succeeded with a signing of a memorandum of agreement.
However, when it was endorsed in Manila for imprimatur to the National Electrification Administration (NEA), it was not acted upon. That was when they found out about the internal feud happening between Daneco-NEA and Daneco-Cooperative Development Authority.
Gales said that due to the feud, the rehabilitation of the submarine cable and their efforts to curb the impending power crisis have been dragged down and messed up.
"That hope for Samal to speed up for cable dragged and messed up. We don't care who runs Daneco as long as we have a stable source of energy," he said.
The local government unit of Igacos has sought for the help of the Mindanao Development Authority and the office of the Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Carlos Jericho L. Petilla.
Gales mentioned that it might take the President's help to address their power crisis.
"We have seen no other hope but the intervention of the President," he said.
Last Friday, Petilla has ordered both factions in the Daneco feud to perform an audit and accounting during the
Daneco-DOE Dialogue held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel. It was also decided that starting Agust 31, Daneco-NEA will be the sole collector of the bills until the referandum on the second saturday of January.   source
