THE entire provincial government of Misamis Oriental headed by Bambi Emano and its provincial board headed by Vice Gov. Jose Mari Pelaez opposed the plan by FDC Utilities Inc. to put up a coal-fired power plant in the province thought they can emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through its coal plants without affecting Cagayan de Oro, and their own people and so they thought consultations on the matter is limited to their own province forgetting that when Misamis Oriental salivates, Cagayan de Oro gets the virus.
With a Department of Environment that does not even know how to regulate, monitor and implement environmental laws on logging and mining, how can we ever expect strict compliance of regulations concerning carbon emissions of aging coal plants dumped and already rejected from other countries?
Many thought that Vice-governor Pelaez of Misamis Oriental could be afflicted with dementia or selective amnesia for telling the world one day that he is against it and approving the same the next day. Ben Contreras wrote that when he says "No," what he meant was a "Yes."
That as he joked on the man to be either a “liar” or a "cerebral fruit salad”. Cong Corrales was quick to refer the matter to the Song of Abba entitled "Money, money, money." The problem with our nation is that we put into sensitive public positions those who are afflicted with anti social personality disorders whose character involve harming others without knowing that they are wrong and we cannot get our actions together to stop them for various reasons from ignorance to apathy and/ or lack of he will to sacrifice for the common good. Many among us though, remain committed to protect, preserve and restore the environment and we are sending the message that we will keep the faith and make the difference.
Phasing out their old unreliable coal plants.
Canada had 16 gigawatts of total coal-fired capacity installed in 2012. Also, Environment Canada estimated that “between 2010 and 2025, 28 units were expected to cease operations.” Those 28 units account for 51 per cent of the existing fleet. Regulations that affect proposed new coal plants in the U.S. are therefore likely to have a larger overall impact on GHG emissions than Canadian regulations.
Rejected Old plants which emit more megawatts of carbon dioxide are dumped into to our Country
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed new regulations for coal- and natural-gas-fired power plants. The proposed rules limit emissions intensity at 500 kg of carbon dioxide per megawatt hour for new coal plants and 450 kg of carbon dioxide per megawatt hour for new gas-fired plants.
To put that in context, the emissions intensity of a new coal-fired power plant without carbon capture and storage is approximately 900 kg of carbon dioxide per megawatt hour, while new gas plants are generally below 400 kg per megawatt hour.
Coal power kills
Nixon A. Baban, chairman of Bangon Kagay-an wrote, "carbon Dioxide kills.” Coal is a fossil fuel that is burned during power generation, it unavoidably emits CO2, one of the major causes of global warming. Not only that of all the fossil fuels used for power generation, coal is the largest emitter of CO2.
So you think COAL FIRED POWER is the best option: 1. It is non-renewable and it is causing global warming. 2. Although it is now cheap, if the coal continues to be used in such a way, it will soon be very expensive. 3. Burning a fossil fuel produces carbon dioxide, which contributes to the greenhouse effect, warming the Earth. So don't wonder about the floods nowadays. 4. Mining coal can be difficult and dangerous. Strip mining destroys large areas of the landscape. 5. Coal extraction is dangerous and mining for coal destroys the environment.
File second environmental case to the Court
Bangon Kagay-an, the group who lead the filing of the granted petitions for the Writs of Kalikasan and Mandamus and the pending case for the Temporary Environmental Protection Order against Mining in Cagayan de Oro in a statement said: POLITICS + PROFITS = POLLUTION "It was approved because no one came to oppose it," Vice-gov. Jose Mari Pelaez.
In a report, Oct. 21, 2013 issue. "Several letters were sent to LGUs, NGOs and schools & other stakeholders... "We wonder if Cagayanons are not stakeholders. Just about a week ago, this same government official strongly opposed the planned coal-fired power plant in MisOr over DXCC.
We have anchored our position on this pronouncement and repose our full trust that under his leadership, this coal energy issue will not succeed. And in a sudden twist of fate, the Provincial Board of Misamis Oriental voted unanimously in its favor.
New and existing coal power generating plants are now banned/phased out in many countries mainly because they caused air Pollution. One can never totally control the emission of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury compounds released to the atmosphere when coal is burned.
But these coal powered plant companies will argue that they have the technology to control/limit carbon emission which they have not even succeeded in 1st world countries. We will be the first beneficiary of air pollution if we do not put a stop to this. Maayo lang unta ang ila lang panimalay ang maapektohan. Air pollution respects no boundary.
We urge every concern citizen of Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao to immediately study this matter (Google it, the subject is all over the net). Then, let us convene soon and perhaps if the circumstance warrants, bring this matter to the court."
Bad for Tourism
Businessman Tito Mora, President of the Travel and Tours Association of Cagayan de Oro said, "The unanimous approval by the Provincial Board for the construction of a second coal-fired power plant is a tragic contradiction and a disastrous legacy for future generations.
I attended the Tourism Summit as President of the Cagayan de Oro Travel and Tours Association, and hailed the Governor when he proclaimed that tourism will be the engine of growth for the province under his watch. And rightly so.
Misamis Oriental possess all the elements to make it as one of the top tourism destinations within this decade. Sadly, using coal, the world's number one energy source pollutant will simply put all these investments and programs to waste.
Bane of the environment
Renato Tibon, Civic (Kiwanis) Socio-political (Bangon Kagay-an vice-chairman, Centrist Democrats Party) and Couples for Christ religious leader said, "Not many understand that coal-powered plants are the bane of environment. It's why many countries are banning its use and for a third-world country like us already suffering from ecological degradation to use it as energy source, it's like rubbing salt to injury. Why do they refuse to see what others have seen and experienced, that it's causing harm to our planet? Simply put, coal like other irreplaceable fossil fuels such as gas and oil emits a great amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to the 'greenhouse effect' that is causing global warming. Man is more to blame and not the natural course of climate change. We may wake up one day, water has crept up our beds even when we reside on higher grounds.
How else do we explain a great amount of rain usually spread over a month pouring in just one day and inundating cities? To avert this certain disaster on our shores, we must vehemently oppose the construction of this coal-powered plants. As a cheap source of energy, the savings derived from it will never justify the destruction it poses to our country and to our people. NO TO COAL-POWERED ELECTRICITY!"
Youthful, Jay-r Chan wrote, "They said that it is safe to have CO2 emissions under 100,000 gigatons?! I don't think so! Since there is emission under 100,000 gigatons it can still harm the environment and the people surrounding it.
These politicians are having that third world mentality while we citizens are advocating a first world safety! Former Brgy Captain, retired health information officer and civic leader Oscar Oca Caiña wrote," Yes, undangon sa na nga plano,sudlan na usab kini sa politika, pipila lang ka katawhan ang makapahimulos unya niini in other way makasapi, may hidden agenda sa mga promoter… pls let them move to some other place…"
