BRITISH FIRM Aggreko Plc, a provider of temporary power supply, expects to seal more contracts with local companies amid a foreseen power crisis in the country.
“The critical period for the Philippines’ power situation has been moved to 2015 from 2011 since new plants were commissioned in 2010,” Maximino Montenegro, Aggreko International business development manager, said in a forum on Tuesday.
“Nevertheless, the situation remains critical because of the country’s dependence in [hydroelectric] power amid future possibilities of drought and a current lack of commitment in increasing the capacity of hydro power,” he continued.
A 300-megawatt (MW) supply shortfall has been projected for Luzon for 2011-2012, with another 11,900 MW to be needed up to 2030, the Energy department has said. For the Visayas, 2,150 MW of additional power is needed until 2030 and for Mindanao the requirement is a slightly higher 2,500 MW.
The firm explained that its potential role in the local industry could involve hiring out power equipment to businesses or operating as a power producer itself by putting up plants.
In both cases, Aggreko cited miners, industrial manufacturers, service companies, and even Olympics organizers as beneficiaries of their services.
“Recent customers of our power rentals include the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, and the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics,” Brano Kollar, Aggreko International business development director for Asia, told the audience.
The firm, meanwhile, has strategic power projects throughout the country supplying a combined 37 megawatts to its multiple clients.
