THE National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) on Wednesday said that it has successfully completed the replacement and relocation of transmission towers damaged by a typhoon.
In a statement, the country’s transmission service provider and system operator said that new three towers along the Bakun-Sudipen transmission line are now online to replace the ones damaged during the height of Typhoon Pepeng in October 2009.
“Wood pole structures were bypassed and replaced the damaged towers with permanent steel structures,” the NGCP.
The new towers were also rerouted and fitted with reinforced foundation that will help secure it from heavy flow of water from the Amburayan River.
The structures, which are part of the 54-tower Bakun Sudipen 230 KV transmission line, are located along the boundaries of Sudipen, La Union and Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.
It was commissioned in 2000 to serve as a transmission highway for the Bakun Hydro Electric Power Plant to the Luzon grid.
With the towers’ restoration completed, the nearby Bakun hydro plant can now resume its power supply to the Luzon grid, and the normalization of the San Esteban-Bakun and Bauang-Bakun 230-kiloVolt circuits.
NGCP is the private operator of the country’s power transmission network, or the facilities that bring electricity from power plants to private distribution utilities and electric cooperatives.JAMES KONSTANTIN GALVEZ
