National Grid Corporation of the Philippines has asked the Energy Regulatory Commission to approve its P2.4-billion Tuguegarao-Lal-lo (Magapit) 230-kV transmission line project.
National Grid said in a filing the project would improve the overall reliability of the transmission network in northern Luzon.
“Thus, the implementation of this project is necessary in order to provide for the necessary transmission connection of new wind power plants in the province of Cagayan, like the 50-MW Sanchez Mira wind power plant and the 160-MW Trans-Asia wind power plant,” it said.
The company said the project would also address voltage and line capacity issues and result in the operational flexibility for the supply of substations along the existing Tuguegarao-Magapit 69 kV line.
National Grid said the project involved the construction of a new transmission line from Tuguegarao substation to the proposed Lal-lo (Magapit) substation; the expansion and configuration works of the 230-kV Tuguegarao substation; and the construction of a new Lal-lo (Magapit) 230-kV substation.
“Consider the necessity to construct the project in order to avoid interruption of power supply during line outage, repair and rehabilitation and to ensure power quality to the electricity consumers in the northern part of Luzon,” it said.
The proposed transmission line project is part of the development of the North Luzon kV loop that will connect the northwestern and northeastern 230-kV backbone of the Luzon grid.
“This loop will provide adequate transmission facilities to cater to the huge wind power generation potential in the region, and importantly, to improve the overall reliability of the transmission network of northern Luzon,” National Grid said.
The company said that once approval is granted, it plans to start project construction this year and complete it in 2016. source
