The latest system improvement in the roll of completed projects by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) had been the expansion of its Tayabas substation in Quezon province.
The facility reinforcement required P290 million in investments, according to the company.
“The substation expansion is done in anticipation of possible generation dispatch scenarios of power plants in Quezon and Bicol region,” the power grid operator has emphasized.
The major component of the Tayabas substation upgrade was the installation of a new transformer – which was intended to supplement the capacity of the existing three transformers at the substation. The new 600-megavolt ampere (MVA) transformer was energized end of February.
Additionally, the expansion undertaking covered “the establishment of bus protection and fire protection systems,” which NGCP deemed as “essential mechanisms to maintain security and integrity of the substation equipment.”
The grid operator explained that the bus bar “is a transmission line equipment made of aluminum or copper and supported by insulators.” It basically connects a series of transmission lines circuits with transformers and other substation devices like circuit breakers and switches.
NGCP spokesperson Cynthia Alabanza expounded that the installed protection schemes are intended “to avoid possible faults in the system that could lead to prolonged brownouts or even blackouts.”
She stressed that the company is “trying to equip all of (its) substations with fire and bus protection systems to keep our personnel safe and our system intact.”
At the Tayabas facility, the end-goal of the transmission firm will be to establish N-1 contingency, so the asset can sustainably operate even in the case of a loss of major component in the system.
Alabanza emphasized that the uprating investment made by the company at the Tayabas facility “is crucial to our operations because the substation serves as the link of the Bicol to South Luzon and Manila grids.”   source
