Two lawmakers on Tuesday broached the idea of exploring and developing alternative sources of energy like solar power in a bid to address the rotating blackouts in Mindanao.
Manila Rep. Carlo Lopez, a member for the majority of the House committee on energy, stressed the need for the government to consider alternative sources of energy like solar energy, which he said, is abundant in the country.
Lopez said that the country has other sources of energy, like hydroelectric and geothermal energy, but the supply is inadequate.
Lopez earlier in 2011 proposed a Solar Energy Development Authority, whose task is to study and formulate policies on solar energy but his proposal had been pending in the House of Representatives.
Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño, meanwhile, raised the possibility of using renewable energy in Mindanao instead of Energy Secretary Carlos Petilla’s proposal to raise electricity rates to a considerable P18 per kilowatt per hour or construct bunker or diesel fuel power plants. source
